Bill Gates Announces 2012 Scholarship Program For Low-Income Minority Students -- Gates' non-profit organization is giving away 1,000 Scholarships for the 2011-2012 school season -- Click here to go to the Gates Millennium Scholars Program Application.

Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft Nationwide (BlackNews.com) -- The Gates Millennium Scholarship Program (GMS) will select 1,000 talented students next year to receive a good-through-graduation scholarship to use at any college or university of their choice. Scholars will also be provided with personal and professional development through their leadership programs, along with academic support throughout their college e career.

The program, funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, was established to provide outstanding low income minority students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education in any discipline area of interest. To date, the program has given scholarships to more than 15,000 students. Continuing scholars may request funding for a graduate degree program in one of the following discipline areas: education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health or science.

The mission of the NYCHA Resident Training Academy (NRTA) is to prepare NYCHA residents for potential employment with the New York City Housing Authority by way of the Caretaker training or the Construction training. During training participants will improve upon critical soft skills that support long-term employment and learn key hands-on skills required to perform job duties safely and effectively. All NRTA training programs and activities are designed to position individuals for entry-level employment, but also to assist in the development and execution of a career plan, which over time, may lead to career advancement opportunities.

The following scholarships are still available:
• Merit Scholarship for Freshmen: The College offers a number of full and partial- tuition awards to academically eligible freshmen. These awards are funded for two years, provided recipients maintain “B” average or higher while attending Queensborough.
• Technology Scholarships: Recently, Queensborough received funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to offer a number of tuition-free scholarships for two years of study for freshmen enrolling at the College in fall. Applicants must be interested in studying either Electrical Engineering Technology or Laser and Fiber Optics Technology.
• Khym Foundation Scholarships: These scholarships are offered to entering freshmen with demonstrated financial need. Amounts vary for these need-based scholarships and they may be awarded for up to two semesters only.

The deadline has been extended to June 15th for these scholarships.

NYCHA/CUNY Resident Scholarship Program

The Resident Scholarship Program is one of the many ways that the New York City Housing Authority NYCHA invests in the education of its residents. Established in 2005 by NYCHA through donations received from production companies that filmed on NYCHA premises, the Resident Scholarship Program provides $1,000 scholarships for qualifying public housing residents who are enrolled in colleges of the City University of New York (CUNY), in a variety of majors with at least a 3.0 grade point average.

The scholarship can be used to help pay for college tuition, books or other education related expenses at a CUNY senior or junior college. There are two types of scholarships, one for residents who are full-time undergraduates at a CUNY college, and one for residents with disabilities who are enrolled in a CUNY undergraduate program.

The 2011 Resident Scholarship Program application period is open from May 2 -May 31.

Savino Offers $500 scholarship to Juneteenth Essay Contest Winner

State Senator Diane J. Savino (D-I-WF Staten Island) will bring Juneteenth, a celebration of African American freedom, to Staten Island for the first time as an elected official sponsored event. Juneteenth is a celebration commemorating the day many slaves first heard the emancipation proclamation for the first time and realized their freedom. June nineteenth of 1865, slaves in Galveston, Texas were read the emancipation proclamation and word spread rather quickly plantation to plantation that they were no longer slaves, but free men and women.

Today, Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. A time marked with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics and family gatherings. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing.

The essay award will be presented amid a Juneteenth festival at the new Carter Community Center at 230 Broad Street 7-9 pm on Friday, June 17th. Essays must be less than 500 words and have the name address and contact information of the author. Entries are due in State Senator Diane j. At noon on Friday, April 1, 2011, Ms. Jodi Siegel, CFN 405 Network Support Facilitator, received an invitation for UNSL students to attend the Keepers of the Dream Awards event to take place Wednesday evening, April 6, 2011. The event was black tie. The security procedures were extremely tight.

The event was to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the National Action Network, whose president is Al Sharpton. The event was held at the Sheraton Hotel. 3,000 attendees were present. Only, and I repeat only, 40 students were in attendance for the event. The security screening was heavy-duty.

There were many VIPs and celebrities in attendance. As you can see the students had a chance to take pictures with MIke Mulgrew, the UFT President.

Bill Cosby gave a sharp, ringing keynote speech about the duty of adults to monitor children. Click here to see more of Mr. Cosby's statements at the conference. In addition to Bill Cosby, Earvin "Magic" Johnson, Muhammad Ali, and Samuel L. Jackson;
President Obama was in attendance.

Who represented from McKee? Ms. Starkey, our COSA, and was also one of the chaperones, and two of our students attended: Michael DiMartino and Tyreek Penn.

The Assessment Center handles the testing and placement of all incoming students in cooperation with our Admissions office. Appointments for taking the Accuplacer test for English and math course placements are made through academic support services.
Aviation Outreach Program (AOP)
This program aims to increase the number of prepared students that enter college and improve participation and performance, specifically in mathematics, science and technology. Community involvement, networking and outreach are a vital part of the program.

Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP)
Vaughn participates in the New York State Education Department's Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP). This program has been designed for educationally and economically disadvantaged New York state residents who otherwise might not be able to attend college. HEOP provides several academic and financial support services to assist students. These services include the summer immersion program, tutorial services, counseling services and financial assistance. Quick Start Pre-Freshmen Summer Immersion Program
This is an intensive, six-week summer program to introduce pre-freshmen to fundamental math, science, technical and aviation-related concepts.

Upward Bound Program
Upward Bound is a federal TRIO program funded by the US Department of Education, which is distributed to institutions through competitive grants. TRIO programs help students overcome social and cultural barriers to higher education. Upward Bound serves disadvantaged, first-generation and low-income high school students and is designed to motivate high school students and help them gain important skills necessary for success beyond high school. This program encourages and addresses the needs required to successfully complete high school and post-secondary education. Upward Bound is the type of program that will provide academic, social and cultural experiences during the high school years, which will greatly increase the probability of students enrolling in college and graduating from college.

Spring 2010 Brochure and Application

The Frederick A.O. Schwarz Children’s Center, in partnership with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, presents Saturday Academy for students in grades 8–12.

Saturday Academy at the Museum of the City of New York is a free, elective six-week program for students interested in American History or SAT preparation. Best of all, there’s no homework or testing and all course materials are provided!

Spring 2010 courses meet on March 13th, 20th, 27th and April 10th, 17th, and 24th. Students may enroll in one or two courses a semester. All courses are available at two times: Session I runs from 9:00 am to 10:20 am; Session II runs from 10:30 am to 11:50 am. Students who complete all course requirements and a semester evaluation will receive a Certificate of Achievement at the end of the program.

The Past Is Present: American History on Stage
Instructor: Nicole A. Watson, Theater Artist and M.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies,
NYU Gallatin School of Individualized Study
Open to students in grades 8 – 12
An exciting way to learn about the past is to re-create or re-imagine it through the visual and performing arts. In this class students will read plays that interpret historical events and issues. Students will then have the opportunity to create their own monologues inspired by individuals represented in a mural or photograph from the 1920s and 1930s. Students will examine primary sources both written and visual to learn American history and explore how to use these sources to dramatize the past. The class will culminate in a performance of the students’ monologues.

Urban Legend: The Story of East Harlem
Instructor: Elizabeth Hamby, B.F.A. in Fine Art, Parsons School of Design
Open to students in grades 10 – 12
Urban Legend: The Story of East Harlem will use East Harlem as classroom and textbook. Students will gather information about the history of East Harlem by investigating the people, buildings, public spaces, and art works in the neighborhood. Based on these observations, they will draw connections between the neighborhood and broader themes in American urban history such as arts and culture, parks and community gardens, urban planning, public housing reform and transportation. Students will use map-making, writing, and drawing skills to creatively interpret their research and will collaboratively produce a dynamic neighborhood map to share their findings.

Voices in History: Gathering Powerful Stories from Our Communities
Instructor: Rachel Falcone, Artist and Oral Historian, B.A. in Philosophy, Vassar College
Open to students in grades 8–12
History is made by everyday people. In this class, students will explore how the voices of these people have been documented through various media and what stories can tell us about a particular event, era, or community. As part of the class, students will gain hands on experience interviewing and gathering the personal history of community members. The class will culminate with a creative project in which students will share the stories they have collected by displaying them on posterboards, or through creating songs, poetry, or art.

Instructor: Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions
Open to students in grades 11 and 12
Test preparation can help students maximize their performance on standardized tests and increase their odds of college acceptance and merit-based financial aid. In this course, students will learn time-honored techniques for taking the SAT and master key Kaplan strategies. Kaplan faculty will cover critical reading, math, and writing skills. New 42 Apprentice Program @ the NEW VICTORY Theater. Open to college and graduate students, as well as high school students (ages 16+) during the summer, The New 42 Apprentice Program introduces participants to the varied aspects of operating a nonprofit arts organization. New 42 Apprentices are assigned to a department depending on their personal fields of interest, along with a staff assessment of where they can learn and contribute most effectively.

Working alongside theater staff and technicians, these students gain first-hand experience in performing arts administration through work placements that include seminars and workshops designed to establish a firm foundation for their future as emerging professionals.

FIGMENT, one of Governors Island’s key cultural partners, has joined forces with The Emerging New York Architects Committee (ENYA) of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) New York Chapter and the Structural Engineers Association of New York (SEAoNY) to sponsor a competition to design and construct an architectural pavilion for the 2010 summer season on Governors Island, the City of Dreams Pavilion.

Essential requirements of the proposal are as follows:

Create a gathering place for 50 or more people, providing shade and rain cover
Consider the full lifecycle of the materials used—where they come from and where they will go after the island closes for the 2010 season
Provide for the design and construction of the project, including sourcing all materials
All materials must be able to be transported on the Coursen Ferry (12’6” clearance)
The structure must be freestanding, and cannot penetrate the ground to a depth greater than 6”
The design must be approved by the Governors Island Preservation and Education Corporation (GIPEC), the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC), and the NYC Department of Buildings prior to construction
Include a budget that anticipates all costs of fabrication, transportation, installation, and de-installation

Optional considerations:

How will the pavilion support educating the public about arts programs on the island?
How will the pavilion support informal performances or lectures?
What other kinds of activities could take place in the pavilion?

THE TWO MAIN FINANCIAL AID FORMS: FAFSA & CSS

I. FAFSA:The Free Application for Federal Student Aid must be filed by ALL Year 2 students applying for financial aid. The FAFSA can be filed as early as January 1 of Y2 (it is not available before) and we encourage families to file by January 15th or February 1st at the latest (check with the schools for their deadlines). Families should use the previous year’s income tax return forms and estimate, to the best of their knowledge, any changes. If need be, a FAFSA correction can be filed once the current year’s tax return is completed. Students can enter up to six schools on the FAFSA. Additional schools can be added by using the FAFSA correction form. Paper FAFSAs will be available in the CTO this December. However, online filing (www.fafsa.ed.gov) is recommended—it speeds up the financial aid process significantly.

IMPORTANT FAFSA LINGO:
• EFC: The Estimated Family Contribution is the amount of money the federal government determines a family can pay for college based on the information filed in the FAFSA. The EFC is the same regardless of variable tuition, room, board and fees at different schools. PREDICT YOUR EFC WITH THE FAFSA-4-CASTER!
• SAR: The Student Aid Report summarizes the information reported on the FAFSA. If the FAFSA was filed correctly, the EFC will be included in the SAR. Schools review a student’s SAR and EFC to come up with a financial aid package.

II. CSS PFOFILE: The CSS or College Scholarship Search Profile is an additional financial aid form that is required by some schools--typically private colleges. The form must be filed in addition to the FAFSA. It can be filed as early as this October at www.collegeboard.com (under “Pay for College”). To find out whether a school requires it, go to the Profile link on the collegeboard website for a list, or check with the individual college.

FOUR TYPES OF FINANCIAL AID (SEE BELOW FOR SCHOLARSHIPS)

Financial Aid Package: Students receive a letter, directly from the accepting institution with their financial aid package. Ideally, the financial aid package meets the difference between the total cost of attendance (tuition, room, board, books, fees) and a families’ EFC. To meet this difference, colleges offer a combination of some or all of the items listed below.

1. Grants are funds that do not need to be paid back and do not require an application. They are often awarded by the accepting institution. Depending on need and eligibility, there are also the following federal and state grants.
• Federal Pell Grant: The maximum award for the 2005-06 year was $4,050. The maximum is subject to change. The amount a student receives is dependent not only on financial need, but also the costs to attend school.
• TAP: The New York State Tuition Assistance Program provides up to $5,000 for New York residents to attend schools in New York State.
• HEOP: Private Colleges in N.Y. State have HEOP or Higher Education Opportunity Programs that offer excellent academic and financial support for students who meet the financial eligibilty requirements (for e.g.: to be eligible, the income for a family of four will be $32,000 or below). 2. Work Study: A federal program that gives students financial assistance through campus employment.

3. Loans: Financial aid that must be paid back
• Stafford Loans: these can be subsidized (the government pays the interest while a student is in school) or unsubsidized (the student pays all the interest, although they can defer payment until after graduation). Stafford Loans are awarded based financial need.
• Perkins Loan: This is awarded to students with exceptional financial need.
• PLUS Parent Loan
• Private Loans

STRIVE has been a recognized leader in securing jobs for the chronically unemployed for over 24 years. We currently operate one of the most comprehensive Green Construction Training programs for the hard-to-employ in New York City. This training cohort has been exclusively designed for disconnected youth ages 18 to 24.

The program is 14 weeks in length and is for both men and women – ages 18 to 24. Participants must have a strong desire to work in the construction industry and be physically fit (see below). Carfare will be provided for the entire 14 weeks and a modest stipend will be paid during the hard skills portion of the program (the last 8 weeks). All participants must complete the month long CORE+ component in order to be eligible for construction training.

In addition, applicants must:
--- Be between the ages of 18 and 24.

--- Have no physical barriers to working in the construction industry (and be able to lift at least 50 lbs.).

--- Achieve a 6th grade reading and 6th grade math level on the TABE Survey (testing will take place at STRIVE).

--- Be carefully assessed and interviewed by STRIVE staff before being accepted in the program.

NYC Ladder for Leaders 2010 Summer Internship Program

Launched by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg in 2006, NYC Ladders for Leaders is a college and career readiness program offering New York City high school and college students’ professional paid summer internships, college scholarships opportunities, free college preparatory and SAT courses, career guidance, and leadership development workshops.

The application is available online at https://www.nyc.gov/html/dycd/html/jobs/ladders_for_leaders.shtml. The deadline to apply is Monday, December 14, 2009.

Who can apply?
Anyone with prior work experience (paid or volunteer) who is:
--A permanent resident of one of the five boroughs of New York City
16 to 21 years of age
--A current high school junior, high school senior, college freshman, or college sophomore
Legally allowed to work in New York
Please Note: Alumni of the NYC Ladders for Leaders program (or its parent programs NYC GirlsREACH and BoysREACH and CAPITAL) are not eligible to apply for the 2010 program.

Please keep in mind that submission of an application does not guarantee acceptance into the NYC Ladders for Leaders program or placement in a summer internship position. --Agreeing to the NYC Ladders for Leaders guidelines (if under 18, must be agreed to by a parent or guardian as well);
--Listing your official scores from any college entrance exams you have taken (such as PSAT, SAT, ACT);
--Listing a valid email address that you check frequently. If you do not have an email address, you can create a free email account at various web hosts including but not limited to www.yahoo.com; www.hotmail.com; www.aol.com; www.gmail.com; etc.(Note – all program communication, including invitations to mandatory program events, will be sent by email only); and
--If you attend Boarding School or College/University located outside of NYC, providing a copy of your School Calendar (including winter and spring breaks, last day of classes and last day of final exams).

2. Mail a copy of your most recent semester report card or college transcript. If you are a college freshman, please mail your last high school report card along with proof of college enrollment (i.e. class schedule) to below address.

Richmond County American Legion Oratorical Scholarship Program

The Richmond County American Legion will be conducting its 73rd Annual American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program on Saturday, December 5th at St. John’s University in the Kelleher Center on the 2nd Floor.
The program will begin promptly at 10:00 AM

The Oratorical Contest began in Missouri in Kansas City, Missouri in 1935 in a state wide competition and went National in 1938. The contest was developed primarily to instill a better knowledge and appreciation of the Constitution of the United States in high school students. Other objectives include the development of leadership qualities, the ability to think and speak clearly, and the preparation for acceptance of the duties, responsibilities, rights and privileges of American citizenship.

Another purpose of the program is to assist students in paying the high cost of a college education. The American Legion Life Insurance Committee provides the scholarship money for the program. The first place winner takes home $18,000 and the next two finishers receive $16,000 and $14,000.

For SAT Review: point and click on the Number 2.com image or click right here to go to Number2.com, for FREE online preparation for the SAT. That's right, it is totally FREE. The key is to start and be consistent. Make a plan that you will do SAT practice for at least 1 hour a day and stick to it. Another option is to dedicate 3 hours on Saturday and 3 hours on Sunday to strengthen one's performance on the SAT.

There are many free test preparation resources. Remember, the key is to begin and be consistent in blocking at least 1 hour each day reviewing the information for the SAT. Green Construction Training Program

STRIVE has been a recognized leader in securing jobs for the chronically unemployed for over 24 years. We currently operate one of the most comprehensive Green Construction Training programs for the hard-to-employ in New York City. Our most ambitious construction training opportunity – our third cohort this year – begins on August 7th 2009 with a newly added solar / photo voltaic installation training module.

STRIVE’s Green Construction Training Program includes the following 10 components:

1. CORE+ (Soft-Skills, Career Development, Job Readiness, Computers, Customer Service, Civics) (120 hours)

2. Intro Green Building Efficiency (10 hours)

3. Basic Construction: Electrical (45 hours)

4. Basic Construction: Carpentry (45 hours)

The program is 14 weeks in length and is for both men and women. Participants must have a strong desire to work in the construction industry and be physically fit (see below). Carfare will be provided for the entire 14 weeks and a modest stipend will be paid during the hard skills portion of the program (the last 10 weeks). All participants must complete the month long CORE+ component in order to be eligible for construction training.

In addition, applicants must:

1. Be between the ages of 18 and 35.

2. Have no physical barriers to working in the construction industry (and be able to lift at least 50 lbs.).

3. Achieve a 6th grade reading and 6th grade math level on the TABE Survey (testing will take place at STRIVE).

4. Be carefully assessed and interviewed by STRIVE staff before being accepted in the program.

Thanks to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, New York City
will receive federal stimulus funds to support the 2009 SYEP. As a result, we will
be expanding the program to add more jobs. To qualify for a job in SYEP, you
must be:
• a New York City resident
• between the ages of 14 and 24 (as of July 1, 2009)
Applications will be out in April, however, interested youth are encouraged to
begin gathering some of the documents that are needed if selected to be a part
of the program. These include:
• Proof of Age (birth certificate, US Passport or Alien Registration Card or
NYS ID or driver’s license)
• Citizenship Status (US birth certificate, US Passport or Alien Registration
Card or Certificate of Naturalization)
• Social Security card
• Work Papers (for youth under the age of 18)

The ArtsLife High School Internship Program

Internship Details:
The ArtsLife High School Internship Program is a paid summer internship for ten (10) high school students intended to help them gain practical work experience in a non-profit art museum setting. Interns will work part-time for six weeks. Each intern will be expected to report to work Tuesday – Friday from 10:00a.m. to 4:00p.m. The 2009 internship will begin on Tuesday, July 7th, 2009 and conclude on Friday, August 21st, 2009. Each intern will be paid a competitive wage.

Eligibility Requirements:
Applicants must be rising juniors or seniors in high school by Fall 2009.
Applicants must live and attend high school in the 5 boroughs of New York City.

Why you want to intern at MAD and what you expect from an internship;

Your experience and/or education in the visual arts or museums, if applicable;

(3) Parent/Guardian Information and Pledge of Support: This form must be filled out by the parent(s) or guardian(s) only, and must be signed and received by the deadline.
(4) Letters of Recommendation: These two (2) letters must be received by the deadline. Be sure to complete the section of the application that indicates from whom the recommendations are coming. Letters of recommendation should come from individuals who can speak for the student’s background and skills and their ability to learn. Pages have been serving the House of Representatives for nearly two hundred years. Working as a team, Pages assist Members with their legislative duties, deliver correspondence and small packages within the congressional complex, answer phones in the Member cloakrooms, and prepare the House Floor for sessions.

High school juniors with a GPA of 3.0 or higher in core academic subjects may apply to work as Pages in the U.S. House of Representatives for a fall or spring appointment. There is no GPA requirement for Pages who work during the summer semester.

While serving the House, Pages live in Washington D.C., at the Page Residence Hall, a few blocks away from the Capitol. During the academic year, Pages attend classes at the House Page School. Pages must be sponsored by a Member of Congress and be at least sixteen years old on the date they begin their term. Harvard University announced over the weekend that from now on undergraduate students from low-income families will pay no tuition. In making the announcement, Harvard’s president Lawrence H. Summers said, “When only ten percent of the students in elite higher education come from families in the lower half of the income distribution, we are not doing enough. We are not doing enough in bringing elite higher education to the lower half of the income distribution.”

If your family earns less than $60,000 a year and you are an honor student graduating from high school soon, Harvard University wants to pay the tuition. The prestigious university recently announced that from now on undergraduate students from low-income families can go to Harvard for free… no tuition and no student loans!

2008-09 NASA University Design Contest in Exploration Systems
NASA invites college students to get involved with NASA's return to the moon by helping to design the tools and instruments needed for the next-generation manned moon rover. Student projects will tackle real problems to be solved for a successful manned lunar mission.
Examples of problems include:
--Navigation in the darkness around the moon's south pole.
--Sample retrieval and on-site analysis.
--Radiation detection and avoidance.
--Communication with lunar outpost, with orbiters and with Earth.
--Video capture of sorties for transmission back to Earth.
--Astronaut rescue and recovery.
--Lunar regolith mitigation strategies for rover and space suits.
